Concrete mixtures contain crushed rock or gravel and sand, bound together by Portland cement in combination with supplemental cementitious materials, which harden through a chemical reaction with water.
As Portland cement is the most expensive component in mixtures, reducing excess cement content and optimizing its usage in concrete mixtures helps to reduce costs as well as the environmental and energy impacts associated with making cement.
