The 4 Fears Every Producer Has Before a Batch Migration (And How to Address Them)

If you've been running the same batch control system for 15 or 20 years, the idea of migrating feels more like defusing a bomb than upgrading software. The system works. Your operators know it. Your mix designs are in there. Why touch it?

Asking them to relearn all of that mid-production is a real burden — and it's not just about the individual. A confused operator means missed shipments, and missed shipments mean phone calls. From supervisors. From customers. From people nobody wants to hear from during a pour.

The answer isn't to minimize the learning curve — it's to get ahead of it. That means training during the install, before the first live batch. It means identifying an internal champion at each plant: someone who gets more thorough training upfront, who becomes the go-to for their crew's questions after go-live. And it means running test batches with operators before the system is live, so their first experience with the new interface isn't under production pressure.

The producers who struggle most with operator adoption are the ones who assumed their team would "figure it out." The ones who do it right treat operator buy-in as part of the migration plan, not something that happens afterward.

 

Fear #4: Our Data Is Too Messy to Migrate

This one is quieter than the others — producers don't always say it out loud — but it's one of the most common reasons migrations get indefinitely delayed.
