An Interview with TJ Oneglia, VP of Construction Materials

O&G Industries is a leading provider of construction services and construction materials in the Northeast. Founded in 1923, O&G has completed some of the region’s most challenging projects and established itself as a leader in the industry.

The relationship between O&G Industries and Sysdyne Technologies started over a decade ago with updating their batch controls. Since then, O&G has adopted Sysdyne’s entire product suite including ConcreteGO, iStrada, and SysdyneBI, and was the first group to implement CloudBatch, the world’s first and only concrete cloud batching system.

We sat down with TJ Oneglia, VP of Construction Materials at O&G Industries to learn more about the decision-making process behind innovating their ready mix technology stack, and their operations today. Watch the full interview on YouTube.

Why did you initially choose Sysdyne as a batch control provider?

10+ years ago, there was a lot of industry consolidation going on, which prompted us to look for an alternative, and with Sysdyne based out of Connecticut, and the majority of our operations here, it seemed like a good match.

O&G is the pioneer of CloudBatch. What led you to be the first to adopt this next generation of concrete batch control?

The ability to remotely access the data and that window into how the batch plants are operating without having to actually be onsite, offers a cutting edge over our competitors. We can check into the quantities batched daily, and if the system is running as efficiently as possible. Plus, great time savings, not only for accounting, but for our QC and operations people.

What would your operations look like if you weren’t in the cloud?

Well, it’d be just like it used to be. I don’t want to say without you running your business blind, but with the cloud capabilities, we can make sure we’re not over or under-batching certain products, and can adjust mix designs & quantities. End of the day, we run reports and see how many tons of cement and stone were used at each plant, then share that information with our back office for accounting purposes.

Can you share your decision-making process to adopt Sysdyne’s entire product suite?

Sysdyne’s CEO, Jill Zhang, was trying to get me on the ConcreteGO dispatch software, but with one person selling me dispatch, someone else for truck tracking, and another selling quality control, I just wanted to do business with one company. Once I saw iStrada, I spoke to some customers already on ConcreteGO and they were happy and getting good results. That’s when I decided to integrate everything.

What I didn’t want was a batch system made by one company or a dispatch system made by another, and those systems can’t talk to each other or, they can only if you sign an interoperability agreement.

I wanted for dispatch to automatically be able to send tickets to the batch computers to reduce errors. I wanted QC personnel to be able to go in to change mixes and have them be the same not only in the dispatch office but the same mixes at the plant. I wanted it all to be cohesive, and when I felt the products were far enough along, that’s when I decided to move forward and ultimately to the Cloud.

How has Sysdyne impacted your success?

With the reliability of Sysdyne’s solutions, we can provide better products and on-time service, day in and day out. That’s what our customers want and ultimately why they choose to do business with a ready-mix company like us.
